Pests of Medical Importance

Other flies

Besides mosquitoes there are several other flies that are important in the United States from a health perspective. These flies typically do not transmit pathogens to humans from bites, but can pick up and move pathogens from one place to another. House flies, for example, are one of the most common pests in areas where people live. These "filth" flies can land on decaying garbage, and then land on your dinner plate! Horse and deer flies, stable flies, biting midges, and black flies while biting flies, do not transmit any known pathogens to people, but their bites definitely hurt.
